Boring → Awesome Demonstration
Grab your guitar, and play any chord progression off the top of your head…
Does it sound predictable? Dry? Mundane?
Are you using the same barre chords that you always choose?
Well, it doesn’t need to be that way! In this lesson I will teach you how to make a simple chord progression sound melodic, and full of flavour. We’ll use techniques like:
- Extended Chord Voicings;
- Unique Chord Shapes;
- Double Stops;
- Arpeggios;
- Phrasing.
If you want to learn how to combine Chords and Melody into one seamless piece of music, then play along with me by following the video!
What are the steps to recreating something similar yourself?
- Let the melody guide your ears across the fretboard;
- Don’t jump across the neck to build a chord – instead build it underneath the melody;
- Use phrasing techniques to make your guitar sing;
- Try to exercise multiple positions of the fretboard, not just one classic box shape.
How do I smooth out the transitions between chords and melody?
I use techniques like double stops, or even arpeggiating chords makes chords feel more like a melody. Droning bass notes are also sometimes helpful, and adding plenty of colour to your chord voicings almost makes it sound like the melody is embedded from within the chord.
If your musical vocabulary is limited, maybe you often catch yourself playing the same chords and scales over-and-over, then it would be highly beneficial for you to learn the intervals within each position of the neck. My CAGED Fretboard Visualisation Masterclass makes this easy for you, as I’ll guide you through simple interval mapping techniques that will give you the confidence you need to visualise anything you can dream of across the neck.
